Strawberry mania and color-coordinated Peeps cupcakes at Wink Cupcakes, Seattle

These strawberry cupcakes and Peeps cupcakes are by Seattle's Wink Cupcakes, via their Facebook page. They did not have either of these when I visited their bakery, but they did have adorable ice cream cone cupcakes, which is something I rarely see. My phone battery died just as I was eating their ice cream cupcake, so I couldn't properly capture my surprise, or the frosting on my nose, when I found out there was frosting under the cake. I'm using a photo from their site to illustrate the inside - it was quite something.

The strawberry cupcakes are available by special order until they're fully in season, according to their blog.

I love how the Peep and frosting colors match!

The ones below were for a media appearance - how cute is the chick hatching?

Cupcakes for Cures charity cupcake event April 10th

Cupcakes for Cures is a special event taking place April 10th in Asheville, North Carolina, to raise money to cure cancer. It takes place from 1 to 4 pm at The Grove Park Inn (290 Macon Avenue) and looks like a great event. Visit www.cupcakesforcures.com for more information.

From their press release:

Professional bakers, amateur bakers and youth bakers will compete for bragging rights and fantastic prizes all while raising funds to find cures for cancer. Bakers can enter multiple culinary creations in true Asheville categories: Best Beer Cupcake, Best Gluten-Free Cupcake, Best Holiday and Special Occasion Cupcake, Best Birthday Cupcake and Best Local Foods Cupcake. Bakers should visit www.cupcakesforcures.com to enter. The deadline for entries is Wednesday, April 6 at 5:00pm.

The Grove Park Inn, www.bakeitpretty.com, and Greenlife Grocery are major sponsors of the event and will send judges to the competition. The Grove Park Inn is the host sponsor and is providing the grand prize, their Bed, Breakfast and Dinner for Two Package. Other judges include Marcianne Miller, author of The Artful Cupcake: Baking & Decorating Delicious Indulgences and Mackensy Lunsford, food editor for Mountain Express.

There's also an e-card you can send to let people know you're competing.

Check out the specifics on the category competition, especially the beer one:

* Best Birthday Cupcake: a cupcake that screams birthday to someone who’s 5 or 50.

* Best Gluten-Free Cupcake: a cupcake that excludes ingredients derived from gluten-containing cereals: wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, and triticale.

* Best Holiday or Special Occasion Cupcake: Halloween, 4th of July, Weddings and Baby Showers, there are so many occasions to enjoy cupcakes.

* Best Savory Cupcake: a non-dessert cupcake that sounds more like an entrée than a cupcake

* Best Beer Cupcake: Asheville is Beer City USA after all. Two requirements for this category: beer is used as an ingredient and only contestants 21 years and older can enter a cupcake in this category.

* Best Local Foods Cupcake: a cupcake with one or more local ingredients, i.e. ingredients grown and produced within 100 miles of Asheville

You can also fan Cupcakes for Cures on Facebook and we look forward to hearing how it went and posting photos from this exciting event.

Trix cereal cupcake + mail order Twilight cupcakes from Sweet Avenue

I'm loving this Twitpic by The Urban Housewife of cupcakes from Rutherford, New Jersey's Sweet Avenue Bake Shop. They just look so fun!

The cereal one is their new January special, via Facebook:

For the month of January, our Magical Mystery cupcakes will feature the same theme - Cereal Surprise! We wanted to create something fun & childlike. No matter how grown up you are, everyone loves a colorful bowl of cereal. Today's Magical Mystery flavor is TRIX.

This one is a Trix-filled vanilla cake with cotton candy frosting, topped with more Trix.

Sweet Avenue is now offering national shipping on their cupcakes, which includes their famed Twilight cupcakes and a DIY cupcake kit to create your own. The cupcakes are $45 for 6 cupcakes for the Twilight ones or "The Decorate It Yourself Cupcake kit includes your choice of three cupcakes, three frostings, and your choice of 3 sprinkles."

Here's a fan photo from Facebook of what someone made with the DIY kit:

They've been doing printed cupcakes; you can see lots of examples in this Facebook album - a few are below.
